Lagosnewsblog report that Millions of Nigerian households are beginning to experience relief as the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, declines across several parts of the country following improved product supply and lower depot prices.
Recent market surveys indicate that cooking gas now sells between ₦1,100 and ₦1,350 per kilogramme in Lagos, Ibadan, and Abeokuta. In Benin City, Port Harcourt, and Warri, prices range from ₦1,150 to ₦1,400 per kilogramme, while residents of Onitsha and Enugu purchase LPG at ₦1,200 to ₦1,450 per kilogramme. In Abuja, prices currently range between ₦1,250 and ₦1,500 per kilogramme.
With the price reduction, consumers can now refill a 5kg gas cylinder for between ₦5,500 and ₦8,250, while a 6kg cylinder costs between ₦6,600 and ₦9,900. Refilling a 12.5kg cylinder now costs between ₦13,750 and ₦20,625, depending on location and retailer.
Speaking on the development, the President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, Edu Inyang, explained that although prices have dropped significantly, northern states still record higher prices due to increased transportation and logistics costs.
According to him, consumers in Kano and Kaduna currently pay between ₦1,300 and ₦1,550 per kilogramme, while those in Maiduguri and other North-East states pay between ₦1,350 and ₦1,650 per kilogramme, making the region the most expensive for cooking gas.
Inyang stated that the national average price of LPG now ranges from ₦1,100 to ₦1,650 per kilogramme, noting that variations remain because of transportation expenses, retailer pricing policies, and proximity to gas depots.
He attributed the recent price reduction to improved availability of LPG from both local producers and imported supplies. He also cited declining depot prices, increased competition among marketers, and the end of panic buying as major factors responsible for the downward trend.
The latest development comes as welcome news after months of soaring cooking gas prices, which placed additional financial pressure on households nationwide. Industry stakeholders remain optimistic that sustained supply and improved distribution will help stabilize prices further and make clean cooking energy more affordable for Nigerians.
