The Governor of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially sworn in HRM Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom in Epe Division, as the sixth Chancellor of Lagos State University.
The investiture ceremony, held on Tuesday, April 7, at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Alausa, marked a historic milestone for the institution, as Oba Ogunsanwo becomes the first traditional ruler to occupy the revered position. The event was attended by members of the university’s Governing Council, management team, and prominent traditional rulers.
The appointment, made in accordance with the provisions of the Lagos State University Law of 2004 (as amended), follows the completion of tenure by former Chancellor, Gbolahan Elias. As stipulated by law, the Chancellor will serve a five-year term, with eligibility for a second and final term.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the appointment as both deliberate and symbolic, noting that it reflects a strategic blend of tradition and modern governance. He emphasized the critical role of traditional institutions in fostering social cohesion, moral leadership, and sustainable development.
According to the governor, Oba Ogunsanwo’s distinguished record in public service, including his tenure as Chairman of the Lagos State Inland Revenue Service, alongside his commitment to community development and cultural preservation, positions him as a worthy occupant of the office.
He highlighted that the role of Chancellor goes beyond ceremonial duties, serving as a custodian of the university’s values, a symbol of continuity, and a moral compass for the academic community. Sanwo-Olu urged the new Chancellor to uphold the institution’s traditions, strengthen unity among its governing bodies, and sustain its reputation for academic excellence.
The governor further charged the university to remain a hub for impactful, policy-driven research and a key partner in addressing contemporary societal challenges, assuring continued government support to enhance institutional growth and performance.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, described the appointment as a unique convergence of intellect, heritage, and higher learning, expressing confidence that the new Chancellor would leverage his vast experience and network to advance the university’s global relevance.
The investiture signals the beginning of a new era for Lagos State University—one expected to be defined by stability, innovation, and renewed prestige.
