Tragedy struck the Ayetoro area of Epe following a fatal road accident involving a heavy-duty truck and a commercial tricycle, leaving one person dead and three others severely injured.
The incident occurred near Ayetoro Market when a truck reportedly descending from Paramount Hill lost control, crossed the center divider, and collided violently with a commercial tricycle, popularly known as “Marwa” or “Keke Napep.”
Eyewitnesses told Lagostrend that the truck appeared to have suffered a brake failure while navigating the steep incline. According to bystanders, it became evident that the driver was struggling to regain control as the vehicle accelerated uncontrollably down the hill.
“The driver was trying to avoid hitting other vehicles, but the speed was overwhelming. The tricycle was unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time,” a witness recounted, describing the scene as terrifying.
The force of the collision reportedly crushed the tricycle completely, resulting in the immediate death of one occupant. Three other victims sustained severe injuries and were swiftly transported to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alongside local security operatives and police personnel, arrived promptly at the scene to secure the area and manage traffic congestion along the busy Epe-Lekki Expressway.
In a preliminary update, LASTMA confirmed that efforts were underway to evacuate the wreckage, including the removal of the heavy-duty truck, to restore normal vehicular movement in the area.
The police have commenced a full investigation into the incident, with particular attention to the mechanical condition of the truck. Early findings suggest a possible major mechanical fault, particularly relating to the braking system.
The tragic development has thrown the Ayetoro community into mourning, as emotional scenes unfolded with sympathizers gathering at the accident site to process the shocking loss.
Authorities have urged motorists, especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure routine mechanical checks and adhere strictly to safety regulations, particularly when navigating steep terrains such as Paramount Hill.
Further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
