The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has strongly condemned a violent and premeditated assault carried out against one of its officers by a commercial bus driver at Ojota Interchange in Lagos.
The incident occurred over the weekend along the busy Ojota–Ketu corridor when the driver of a painted Caravelle GL Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number EKY 693 YK was lawfully intercepted for a blatant traffic violation. The vehicle was reportedly being operated with its passenger door recklessly left open while fully loaded with commuters — a dangerous infraction that posed serious risks to passengers and other road users.
According to official reports, upon interception on the main carriageway, the driver reacted with brazen defiance, resisting lawful arrest and attempting to flee the scene by mounting the road median in a desperate bid to evade enforcement. His escape attempt was abruptly halted when the vehicle became mechanically immobilized.
In a shocking escalation, the suspect allegedly seized a jagged broken bottle from within the bus and violently attacked the enforcement officers. One LASTMA officer sustained severe injuries after being stabbed in the fingers of his right hand, resulting in significant blood loss and multiple fractures.
The injured officer was immediately rushed to a nearby medical facility where he underwent emergency surgical intervention. Due to the severity of the injuries, two fingers required operative reconstruction. He remains under close medical supervision and is receiving comprehensive care.
The offending vehicle has since been impounded in strict accordance with statutory regulations, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and bring him to justice.
LASTMA reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to maintaining traffic discipline and ensuring the safety of all road users across Lagos State. The agency emphasized that attacks on its personnel will not be tolerated and assured the public that decisive legal action will be pursued against the assailant.
The Authority also urged commercial drivers and motorists to comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with enforcement officers in order to promote safety, orderliness, and the free flow of traffic throughout the state.
