Concern Mounts Over Delay in Appointment of Local Government Supervisors and Special Advisers in Lagos

Concerned stakeholders and residents across Lagos State have expressed growing worry over the prolonged delay in the announcement of Supervisors and Special Advisers for Local Government Councils, more than six months after council chairmen were sworn into office in July 2025.

Following the inauguration of council chairmen, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, directed that the appointment of Supervisors and Special Advisers be put on hold for three months. The directive was widely understood as a move to ensure proper administrative alignment and due process.

However, six months later, the anticipated appointments have yet to be announced, despite reports that the names of prospective Supervisors and Special Advisers were compiled as far back as last year. The silence surrounding the issue has raised concerns among political observers, party stakeholders, and residents who believe the absence of these key officials may be affecting governance at the grassroots level.

Historically, Lagos Local Government Councils have maintained a structured administrative system where Supervisors and Special Advisers play crucial roles in policy implementation, oversight, and community engagement. Stakeholders note that such a prolonged delay in appointments is unprecedented in the state’s local government history.

Some residents have also raised concerns about accountability and performance at the council level, alleging that without the checks and balances provided by Supervisors and Special Advisers, effective governance may be compromised. They are calling for renewed attention to transparency, prudent management of public funds, and improved service delivery to communities.

Political leaders including Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, widely regarded as the architect of modern Lagos governance reforms, have long emphasized strong grassroots administration as the backbone of development. Observers say the current situation calls for urgent clarification and decisive action to maintain public confidence.
